Enclosure

Rachel Rose

Set of eight gravures from the forthcoming limited-edition artist book. Enclosure is a film, an installation, and a book. Set in the agrarian landscape of 17th-century England, the film follows characters as they navigate the Enclosure Laws beneath the impending specter of cosmic doom. An engrossing story of the madness and magic of the time, Enclosure expands Rachel Rose’s lyrical cinematic output with abstract and exacting cinematography and an originally composed, entirely percussive score derived from the sounds of the landscape. Enclosure is about physical and social division and how the demarcation and destruction of common public space and land led to new forms of displacement and demagoguery. The artist’s book Enclosure includes Rose’s original script pages annotated with sidebars, notes, second thoughts, images, and erasures that kaleidoscope together an unseen narrative of the film, offering a rare insight into the workings of the artist’s mind. The book is evocative less of the final filmic narrative than an ongoing metamorphosis, a constellation of ever-changing thought. Alongside the gaseous galaxy of original script collages, Rose has produced a suite of eight gravures — a medium that precedes the invention of photography and film — created from intricate drawings whose subject matter is sourced from the 15th century to the present. Hovering between these eras and marking the development of modernity, Enclosure becomes a unique document, an intricate line drawn between then and now.
